We aim to partner with like minded organizations that have the same economic and sustainable goals as we have.

Currently we are looking for companies that would like to jointly invest with us to setup an urchin ranching operation near known urchin barrens. Our aim would be to develop a distinct, local brand and promote the ranched urchins to local markets as well as Urchinomics' global network of buyers. Additionally, we are looking for brand advocates, not-for-profit partners and scientists that can help support our purpose. We look forward to hearing from you and hope that you are as keen about what we are doing as we are!

The California coastline stretches for 840miles (1350kms) from the border of Oregon to Coronado beach, San Diego, and Mexico in the very south. All are bathed in the cool Pacific Ocean waters.

However, all is not well under the waves, as the California coastline is full of purple urchin barrens which have devastated the kelp forests. As California is a Mecca for foodies and the environmental conscious we are converting the kelp crisis into an opportunity to develop a new urchin choice at scale for the California restaurant market.

Sumiré is authentically West Coast whilst simultaneously paying homage to Japan because of the feed, flavour profile, and traditions in eating Uni. We’re looking forward to sharing Sumiré with you.

Restorative purple sea urchin from Canada’s east coast.

Our urchins come from some of the purest and coldest waters on earth, the nutrient rich fast-moving Arctic Labrador Current, located off the coast of Canada and the US. This fresh environment has shaped our North American East Coast green urchin brand called, KaiKa.

We mimic the natural flow and composition of this fertile ocean with a solution which is a balance of natural Japanese kombu kelp nutrition, ideal temperature and naturally filtered water like the currents do in the ocean.

By pulling in water from this clean and nutrient rich sea, into our land-based urchin ranching system, and feeding the urchins our proprietary feed, we produce the sought-after signature kombu umami taste profile top tier restaurants and discerning palates seek globally.

Bungo and Choshu Purple Urchin Brands

Located in the southern part of Japan, on the island of Kyushu, you’ll find the Oita and Yamaguchi Prefectures. The Prefectures have coastlines which stretch for hundreds of miles of varied topography ranging from sea cliffs, caves, and sedimentary rock formations which was also the home to a traditionally prosperous fishing industry.

Fishing history runs deep in this part of Japan, which is why our brands pay tribute to the ancient and fertile fishing grounds we wish to help restore. Our Bungo Purple Urchins come from our Oita Uni Farm, whilst our Choshu branded urchins are harvested from our Kayoi Uni Base facility.

The Bungo brand name pays tribute to an ancient provincial name renowned for its rich fishing grounds. The southern part of Oita prefecture is also the location of our Oita Uni Farm. Likewise the Choshu brand also pays tribute to the ancient province name in the western part of Yamaguchi prefecture, where Kayoi Uni Base is located.

Today, we are converting previously worthless purple sea urchin, into a valuable and sought after fishery product. With active commercial shipments to the prefectures and parts of Taiwan, we are therefore helping to resurrect and create sustainable jobs in a region formally renowned for a rich fishing heritage.
