Since our inception in 2015, we have been working hard with our partners in Japan to provide the world with amazing tasting roe that meets the critical standards of the established market in Asia.

The Urchinomics feed technology that turns empty, barren urchins into premium seafood has been in development since the early 1990s, when scientists at the Norwegian state-owned research institute Nofima first began experimenting with a formulated feed for Nordic green sea urchins.

After 25 years of research and countless millions invested in its development, Nofima succeeded in creating a formulated feed that could retain its form in sea water for 7 to 14 days and grow the roe of empty sea urchins within 12 to 14 weeks.

In 2015, Urchinomics negotiated the global rights to this unique feed technology and began improving upon it in Japan in partnership with veteran urchin fishers, biologists, feed technologists and aquaculture specialists.

In 2016, Urchinomics signed an exclusive development and production partnership agreement with Nosan Corporation, a 100% subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation and one of Japan's most successful feed production companies. Through this partnership, we have made further improvements on the feed technology.

Today's Urchinomics feed is:

  • Able to grow the roe of empty sea urchins in as short as 5 weeks

  • Made using the offcuts of sustainably wild harvested and sea farmed kelp, including kombu (laminaria japonica) and wakame (undaria pinnatifida), originally produced for human consumption

  • Antibiotics and hormone free

  • Fish meal and fish oil free

Nosan Corporation and Urchinomics are now working towards customizing the feed to better suit the preferred flavors and colors of our customers around the world. To do this we initially analyze the wild caught urchin's roe to understand the base line parameters we should be targeting. Then, we change the combination and balance of kelp types and other key ingredients in the feed, so that the ranched urchins ultimately result in a similar flavor and color to those found in the wild.

Our Ranching Systems

Urchinomics is in partnership with multiple aquaculture systems manufacturers around the world to design the best sea and land-based ranching systems. Trials are now being conducted in Japan, Canada, USA, Norway and Australia to evaluate our new designs and their compatibility with different urchin species around the world.

Our Networks

Urchinomics is built on a wide network of upstream and downstream partners that help ensure our ranching activities operate efficiently and our products always have a market. Our network of urchin specialists, mainstream distributors and retail accounts throughout East Asia may be one of our greatest strengths, as these networks help ensure the financial success of our ranching operations around the world. Here is a snapshot of some of our activities around the globe.
